A week-long census of the piping plover stared in Canada and the US over the weekend. The results will help conservationists develop protection plans for the endangered species. Bob Jones, a retired zoologist and volunteer nest counter, says the biggest factor for the plover is loss of habitat. The last count, five years ago, showed fewer than 6,000 birds remained.
